In the city-state of Augeas lives magic and evil. Those who hold the magic are in hiding because the evil wishes to destroy them. The lord of the city is held hostage and there are those who wish to save him and restore him to his reign. There are those who plot against him.

The city is in ruins and the citizens are starving. They do whatever is necessary to survive and not draw attention to themselves. Within the city walls is Amador, the city of the Ancient Ones who hold the magic. It is deserted but the magic keeps it as it always was.

There are six short stories with illustrations of the major characters.

• In the first year of the Famine sailings, the ships were supposed to provide each passenger, each week, with a total of 7 pounds of bread, biscuit, flour, rice, oatmeal or potatoes.
• Throughout Ireland 130 workhouses were built. In Newry the workhouse was designed to accommodate a maximun of 800. In 1841, it accommdated 1,283 - half of them children.
• Large amounts of grain, bacon and butter was shipped from Ireland to England during the great potato famine. The Irish were only allowed to use grain to distill alcohol.
• 4 million people left Ireland because of the great potato famine of 1845. The exodus continued for 50 years though the famine was only 5 years long.
• 1.5 million people starved to death during the famine. 2.5 million people left the country.
